Write for High Performance Success

Acclaimed author, Stephen King writes every day. Yes...even authors with tremendous success write every day.  Like anything in which you wish to excel, practice and exercising those “muscles” is a prerequisite for high performance.  It takes commitment, discipline, intention and recognition that writing, particularly with the objective of publishing, is also a business. It can be your passion, escape, and dream. However, to truly achieve the best, you must develop the daily habits similar to a high performing athlete.

Many of our authors are already high performing successful individuals in other fields. They desire the information and expertise that will create the same type of notoriety, financial rewards, career advancement, and accolades they’ve experienced in their primary or prior occupation. As examples, daily routines, training, practice sessions, continuing education, powerful networks, coaches, and mentors are all valuable resources to support the writer’s efforts.  To transition to a full time career in writing, the daily exercise and practice is especially critical. True, there are sprinters and marathoners but commitment of daily rituals lead to a higher level of performance. You will experience writing more in less time with super-charged focus and results.

Exercising different muscles of writing is also valuable. Just as “reps” are important to an athlete, so, too, are the variety. Writing creatively is different than writing for business, social media, law, or scientific research. One may also have developed grant writing skills, achieved sales with client proposals, become a prolific blogger, or victoriously persuaded judges in fort-filed legal briefs. But it’s not writing a book. With books, each genre of writing has its own style, publishing parameters, industry standards, audience expectations, and strategies. Yet, you can confidently build upon the strengths that you have as a writer in one arena and transfer, expand and improve with additional and different exercises in another type of writing.

Further, there are times when a writer must consider that because they wrote a certain way previously-and in many of those times ithe process didn’t work out-consideration of a different methodology might just be the key to realized success. We observe, learn and then, customize a routine and style that’s geared and works for each of us.

Having a support system, someone to believe in you, as an author, is also game-changing. This support system will encourage an environment that is conducive to daily writing. There are plenty of naysayers that will discourage an aspiring author or tell them that their dream of publishing a book is not practical. There will be times when the author feels paralyzed with the proverbial writer’s block (another blog topic here in the future). Establishing a daily routine of writing will assist, however, in alleviating the feelings of doubt, inadequacy and a perceived need for perfection.

Take the first step today. Write something-anything. You’ll find your daily “exercising” leads to greater stamina and performance. Your daily practice of writing will give you a definite advantage over those who aren’t willing to do so. Whatever it is, even as minimal as jotting down some phrases or thoughts inspired by creative daydreaming or solo brainstorming, view each day as an opportunity to exercise, find your sweet spot, and immerse yourself in the joy and art of writing.  Here’s to your high performance success!
