The Artistic Pairing of Imagery and Words
I have always loved the artistic pairing of imagery and words. One of my favorite genres is coffee table or oversized books utilizing photography, painting, illustrations, historical documentation or other coupled with strategically placed and purpose-driven words. Designing a book that allows the reader to linger, reflect, immerse, and revisit its content many times is the objective-creating a treasure of a book that has the owner never thinking of discarding or passing it on but coveting it as part of their collection. Those types of books are indeed art forms on many levels.
As a film director and producer, I’m also passionate about the “behind the scenes” companion books as it’s an effective and creatively satisfying synergy for the purpose of marketing, legacy, advocacy, and education. The blending of the mixed media in these particular coffee table books provides a unique experience for book buyers, film connoisseurs, and collectors.
These books provide additional revenue for the author-artist and a platform for legacy, historical value, and creative preservation. Likewise, the books make great accompaniments to theatrical, museum, and gallery exhibitions. High quality and archival worthy materials, in addition to top-notch printing, with the discerning and talented eyes of a creative team is vital. The appreciation and experience level of those involved to truly understand the meticulous details mandated for the art and process to be showcased at its highest level is just as critical.
However, whatever the genre, your book should always be a work of art-from the book cover, to the interior formatting and layout, to the construction and materials, to the mastery of the words, as well as the display, promotion and marketing.
