No One’s Ever Got Talker’s Block

Have you ever sat in front of a blank Word document to type something and nothing came out? Like, literally not a single word. You start a sentence, delete it, start over, and just ugh.

Writer’s block is very real. Sometimes there’s a good connection between your mind and the keyboard and sometimes there’s not.

What I learned working with a ghostwriter was that while writer’s blocks are very common — talker’s block almost doesn’t exist. We wrote the book by doing hour long phone conversations with our ghostwriter for each chapter. He would then have that conversation transcribed and turn it into a chapter.

It was very cool. It took some of the mysticism out of the equation too. I saw how it was done and it became real. Each week we’d do an interview for each chapter and magically the book appeared. I’d go in and add in little tidbits here or there but, by and large I learned another important lesson.

I mentioned earlier that I love to write. But having read the chapters that our ghostwriter sent to us, I realized at that point in my life I couldn’t have written anything better. In other words, I could have puffed up my ego and said “I’m a writer, I’m better” and it would have never got done. Plus, the book would certainly not been the caliber it is if I had gone solo.

Turns out professional writers are professional for a reason. They’re very good at what they do. They’re extremely efficient.

Start to finish, my book (which was somewhere around 150 pages) was finished in less that four months. In less than 120 days, I went from an idea to a physical book that I could hold in my hands. Unreal.

Most important, in the process I learned all about how this whole book writing world works. I’m hooked.

Happy Writing!
