A Good Storyteller vs. Good Writer

I have been told by many mentors, “I’d rather work with a good storyteller than a good writer.” As I reflect on my storyteller life as a speaker, trial attorney, filmmaker, author and publisher, I wholeheartedly agree! A good editor in collaboration with an author can write, revise, modify or change the direction turning your story into a great book. Aspiring authors will often say, “But I’m not a good writer.” Again, storytelling rules. It’s that way in filmmaking, as well. A good editor can do the same for one’s story in a film. How many times have I heard those in the filmmaking world, “it’s all about the story"? Yet it is.

A good storyteller will have the inspiration, the experiences, the emotional connection, the vision and engagement with his or her audience. That storyteller may or may not have writing skills, experience or even the time to write a book. Like any art form, a good writer has spent years practicing and becoming proficient in their expertise. As discussed in earlier blogs, though, finding the RIGHT writer is critical. A good writer may be proficient at grammar, punctuation and getting the thoughts and information down on paper. However, we must always go back to whether or not that good writer can tell your story in YOUR voice.

If you’re not a “good writer” but you have a good story, don’t hesitate. Don’t feel inadequate or that your desire to be an author will never be realized. A ghostwriter or a co-writer is only one member of the team. Just as in a film, the director has the vision of the story and collaborates with writers, producers, camera crews, editors and many more to arrive at the final product. Have you noticed in films that credits may include something like, “Story By (the director’s name)…” or “A (director’s name) Film? Of course, writers are given the appropriate and deserving credits, as well. However, similarly in a book project, you can be the storyteller but not necessarily, the actual writer. Don’t let not being a “good writer” stop you from your dream. There are good writers and good editors to help you. Reach out to us. We’re here for you.
